We want to express our satisfaction with the work of the EU Border Assistance Mission on the border between Ukraine and Moldova. <\/p>\n

The border segment between Ukraine and the Transnistrian part of the Republic of Moldova has for a long time been a matter of deep concern for the European Parliament. Numerous reports of trafficking in deadly weapons and human beings have showed this part of the Ukrainian border as an important transit point for smugglers. <\/p>\n

We welcome the consequent enforcement of the customs agreement between Ukraine and Moldova concluded in December 2005. This has reduced criminal activities on the Transnistrian border segment considerably, thereby noticeably reducing the threat to security of the countries concerned as well to the security in Europe as a whole. <\/p>\n

The Ukrainian authorities have thus demonstrated their adherence to European standards and the commitment to becoming a full member of the European family. <\/p>\n

We fully appreciate the assistance provided to the Ukrainian authorities by the members of the EU Border Assistance Mission. We want to congratulate Brigadier General Ferenc Banffy on this success. <\/p>\n

We hope that under the Austrian presidency, the European Union will continue to make an effective contribution to dealing with the remaining sources of conflict and instability in Europe. <\/p>\n
