\"\"One year ago today, the then Chisinau Mayor Serafim Urechean tendered resignation after ruling the capital city for over a decade, for he chose to become a parliamentarian. <\/p>\n

Commenting the remarkable anniversary, independent Municipal Council member Mihai Severovan, who ran for Mayor last year, said that the city is presently governed by an Acting Mayor, and situation is fairly complicated. <\/p>\n

"Acting Mayor Vasile Ursu is in fact holding two positions simultaneously – of a mayor and a deputy mayor. This is a work that needs a great concentration of forces. Besides this, he realizes indeed that a mayor elected by citizens, not appointed by the Municipal Council [city parliament] as in the case of Ursu, enjoys a much greater trust and support by citizens, feels free to act the way he thinks correct, and may disregard the interests of various political groups", said Mihai Severovan. <\/p>\n

He said, if Vasile Ursu decides to stand for Chisinau Mayor at the 2007 local elections, he will have to work really hard throughout the remaining months to win citizens’ sympathies. <\/p>\n

Severovan says he himself may well decide to run for the high post next year, and perhaps the only restraint he feels is the repelling low voter turnout at all the 4 electoral attempts in 2005. <\/p>\n

"I stand ready to repeat my electoral campaign, and I feel confidence I am able to change the city’s life for the better. But, of course, it is too early yet to make a final decision", said Mihai Severovan. <\/p>\n

When Serafim Urechean resigned last April 18, he entrusted the Mayor’s plenary powers to Deputy Mayor Mihai Furtuna. Shortly after that, the Chisinau Municipal Council voted for entrusting the authority to another Deputy Mayor – Vasile Ursu. Urechean then organized a farewell news conference, predicted that the early mayoral elections would end in a fiasco [as it turned out later, the election ended in 4 fiascos in succession], and recommended to wait until the ordinary local elections of 2007. <\/p>\n

During the 12 months passed since then, the Communists-dominated Parliament deprived Urechean of his parliamentary immunity, and the General Prosecutor’s Office has brought a legal action against him on charges of abusing position at purchasing ambulance vehicles for a Chisinau hospital.
