Political analyst Dmitry Trenin, deputy director of the Russian Carnegie Centre, said in Chisinau on Thursday that the foreign policy of the Russian Federation towards CIS, including Moldova, aims to maintain the influence in the area in the detriment of the European Union and the United States. <\/p>\n

He noted that the present situation is not generated by a direct conflict between Russia and Moldova. This is a rival policy between the three great powers for a zone of influence, Trenin underlined. <\/p>\n

He stressed that the present economic problems between Moldova and Russia are nothing but political messages of the Kremlin to the Moldovan authorities. "The Moldovan leadership is warned through these messages to avoid political options that disfavour the Russian Federation," Trenin emphasised. <\/p>\n

The Moscow-based Carnegie Centre was created through the Carnegie Fund for Peace in 1993. This organisation aims to study problems related to interior, foreign policy and economy of Russia. The Carnegie Centre is the first and the only organisation that researches issues of this kind and of such a scientific importance in the Russian Federation. The centre organises seminars, conferences, debates with international participation. <\/p>\n

Dmitry Trenin visits Moldova on April 12-17 at the invitation of the Association for Foreign Policy.
