\"\"Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, who takes part in the current meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), had a meeting with Konstantin Kosachiov, head of the Russian parliamentary delegation to the PACE. He asked the Russian official to use all the levers Russia possesses and release the political detainees held in Tiraspol. Konstantin Kosachiov said that the non-execution of the ECHR decision is a useless burden for Moscow and Russia has no advantage if the two detainees from the Ilascu group remain imprisoned in Tiraspol. He also said that Russia does not have sufficient levers for influencing the Tiraspol administration. <\/p>\n

Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu told Free Europe radio station in an interview in Strasbourg that Moldova and Russia paid the damages but did not take the necessary measures to free the prisoners. He said that the situation is difficult both from political and juridical viewpoint because the Transdniestrian authorities are theoretically independent, but Russia’s influence in the region is well known. <\/p>\n

The Romanian Premier voiced hope that when Russia takes over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in May it will take the required steps and set free the two political detainees. <\/p>\n
