The Cooperation Council between the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Moldova held its eighth meeting on Tuesday, 11 April 2006. The meeting was chaired by Ms Ursula Plassnik, Foreign Minister of Austria, who also led the EU delegation. The European Commission was represented by Ms Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the European Commission in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). The EU Special Representative for Moldova, Ambassador Adriaan Jacobovits de Szeged, also took part in discussions. The Moldovan delegation was led by Mr Vasile Tarlev, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova. <\/p>\n

This was the first meeting of the Cooperation Council since the EU and Moldova adopted the ENP Action Plan last year. Progress in implementation was assessed. The EU took the opportunity to stress the need for Moldova to redouble efforts to implement democratic reforms in crucial areas such as media and rule of law, including independence of the judiciary. <\/p>\n

The meeting was preceded by a working breakfast, during which the Transnistrian issue was discussed. The EU expressed its continued support for finding a solution to the conflict that respects Moldova’s territorial integrity. The EU is engaged in this mainly through the EU Special Representative for Moldova, who represents the EU in the 5+2 settlement talks. <\/p>\n

The Cooperation Council also commended the excellent work of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine and expressed its continued support for the mission. <\/p>\n

The EU and Moldova used the occasion to sign a horizontal agreement on air services. The agreement establishes for the first time a bilateral direct air transport relationship between Moldova and the EU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
