Vladimir Voronin and Valdas Adamkus have had a bilateral meeting on the first day of the Lithuanian President’s official visit to Moldova. The event was followed by a meeting of the official delegations from the two countries and a news conference, according to the presidential press service. <\/p>\n

During the plenary meeting of the official delegations, Vladimir Voronin and Valdas Adamkus appreciated the solid political dialogue established between Moldova and Lithuania, and the full agreement between the two presidents on the issues dealing with both bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Vladimir Voronin said that, over the last ten months, he met President Valdas Adamkus three times, and the Lithuanian president described the relations between Moldova and Lithuania as excellent. <\/p>\n

Valdas Adamkus stressed Lithuania’s full support for Moldova’s European integration efforts, saying that the Vilnius authorities will further offer the necessary assistance to fulfil as soon as possible Moldova’s European aspirations. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin expressed gratitude to the Lithuanian authorities for the full political support of Moldova’s actions, which are routed to settle the Transnistrian conflict and to get closer to the European Union (EU). <\/p>\n

The president appreciated with satisfaction that the Vilnius authorities understand and back the implementation of the Moldovan-Ukrainian agreement on regulating the goods’ transit across the Moldovan-Ukrainian customs checkpoints starting 3 March 2006. The asked that Lithuania, as EU member-state, further backs the application of the new customs procedures, as well as the EU Assistance Border Mission’s activity, stressing the importance to assure the transparency and lawfulness at the Moldovan-Ukrainian state border for the final settlement of the conflict from the country’s eastern districts. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin confirmed the Moldovan leadership’s willingness to participate in the Summit of the leaders from the Black Sea’ and Baltic Sea’s regions,due in Vilnius on 4 May, in order to promote the regional cooperation, the democratic reforms and the European values and principles. In the context, the president stressed the Lithuanian president’s personal contribution to strengthening the democratic forces in the states of the former Soviet area. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin and Valdas Adamkus expressed conviction that opening the Lithuanian Embassy in Chisinau and the Moldovan diplomatic mission’s forthcoming inauguration in Vilnius will substantially contribute to extending and deepening the Moldovan-Lithuanian relations. <\/p>\n

Taking the floor before the journalists, Voronin emphasized the productive character of the discussions. We managed to tackle a wide range of the bilateral, regional and continental issues of mutual concern, which were focused particularly on Lithuania supporting Moldova’s efforts to get closer to EU on different dimensions, the president said. <\/p>\n

In the context, Vladimir Voronin told the jurnalists that, in the near future,a Lithuanian adviser on European affairs, who will give advice in the process of implementing the EU Action Plan for Moldova, will be appointed within the Moldovan Foreign and European Integration Ministry (MAEIE). Voronin also expressed gratitude to Lithuania for the active participation in the EU Border Assistance Mission, as well as for the support offered to work out the Moldova-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan. <\/p>\n

Voronin told the jurnalists that Ukraine’s situation after the 26 March parliamentary elections, as well as Moldova’ and Lithuania’s relations with Ukraine represented an important topic of the discussions, which is explained by many relations between the three states. <\/p>\n

Valdas Adamkus said that his official visit to Moldova does not have a purely protocol character, but is meant to settle a series of concrete issues dealing with both countries’ interests. Asked to comment Russia’s recent decision to suspend the Moldovan wines’ import, Valdas Adamkus described this step as "a political attempt to settle a problem by applying the economic levers." " The Russian side makes a huge mistake while rejecting the Moldovan wines, and I hope that it will have good taste, and will come back to Moldova’s wine," the president also said. <\/p>\n

Asked about Lithuania’s economic interests in Moldova, Valdas Adamkus said that the interest to develop the commercial exchanges is mutual, and Lithuania is willing to back Moldova in its economic development, as state which made much progress on this way. <\/p>\n

Referring to the same topic, Voronin said that the composition of the Lithuanian delegation, of which a good deal of members represents the Lithuanian business circles, is an evidence of the numerous prospects of commercial cooperation between the two states.
