"The state exists today, 15 years after it has gained independence, while the basic principles declared on August 27, 1991 have been generally fulfilled, but it is clear that the bases of our state must be strengthened in continuation," President Vladimir Voronin has stated to BBC on occasion of the 15th anniversary of Moldova’s independence. <\/p>\n

According to Voronin, "the territorial integrity is the only problem that we did not resolve so far. But we have assimilated and developed all other attributes of sovereignty of a state." The president noted that he "would not accept any compromise for the sake of any advantage, if this compromise limits the independence of Moldova." <\/p>\n

\"\"The chief of state emphasised that "the integration into the European Union is meaningless if ceding of this kind is required. I exclude any compromise for a faster development of situation in Moldova, too, if this requires any yielding related to independence." The president explained that in 1991 "most reservations were linked to the process that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Our education had influenced us very strongly and those who declare them more courageous today and claim that they had immediately reoriented themselves in August 1991 tell an untruth. One cannot go to bed with a political consciousness and wake up with another. Therefore, this thought continues to live in many minds of ours, but it is streamlined firmly into one direction, rather than it had happened 15 years ago, when no one knew what was going on." <\/p>\n

Voronin noted that his recent meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow aimed to totalise the relations until autumn 2003, when Chisinau turned down the Kozak memorandum, and later. "We have discussed like two men what has happened three years ago and we agreed to make conclusions in order to develop our bilateral relations," President Voronin stated. He stressed that the wine exports to the Russian Federation will restart soon after the Russian-Moldovan commission discusses the existing problems. <\/p>\n

In the context, Voronin reiterated his stance regarding the necessary withdrawal of Russian troops from Moldova. "I think that no troops must stay in Moldova’s territory. Mr. Voronin, President Putin told me, do you realise that our 1,000 military in Transnistria do not matter and they cannot decide anything for us, for me? But we will evacuate them any day when a solution to Transnistria is found," Voronin said. <\/p>\n

As regards the integration into the European Union, the chief of state underlined that "we must build Europe at home first of all. There is much work to do, firstly to improve the quality of life up to the European level." Even more, I realise that President Basescu delivers these statements regarding the speeding up of Moldova’s integration into the family of European countries with goodwill and for our very good personal relations.
