The leader of the Nasha Ukraina (Our Ukraine) bloc, Ukrainian Premier Yuriy Ekhanurov has described the Transnistrian authorities’ appeal, by which they request humanitarian assistance, as an attempt to influence the public opinion from Ukraine. He made statements to this effect within a news conference held in Zaporizhzhya, east of Ukraine, MOLDPRES has quoted the UNIAN agency as saying. <\/p>\n

"We have no problems as regards the goods’ delivery to Transnistria. Everything arrives there. But the show they make now is a result of the decisions on self-blockade they took," Ekhanurov said. <\/p>\n

He said that the contraband in Transnistria was put to and end as a result of the Ukrainian authorities’ actions. He stressed that all Ukraine’s actions just have the aim to establish international rules on goods’ flow in the region. <\/p>\n

"We will not allow anybody to work in this underground zone, no matter whether these people are in Chisinau, Tiraspol, Kiev or Moscow. These gangs who were acting at the border are at present paralyzed, and now they do their utmost in order to involve politics," Ekhanurov said. <\/p>\n

On 3 March, Ukraine put into operation the Ukrainian and Moldovan premiers’s joint declaration from 30 December 2005, which sees authorizing the goods’ transit from the Transnistrian region, only on condition that they are accompanied by documents with the Moldovan customs stamp. <\/p>\n

According to the official Kiev, after establishing the new customs regime, the Transnistrian authorities started blocking the goods’ transit across the border, as well as the processing of documents for them at the Moldovan customs. Tiraspol also asked for Russia’s help. Tiraspol said that, while establishing the new customs rules, Ukraine, in fact, turned from a mediator into a participant in the Moldovan-Transnistrian conflict. On 20 March, Transnistria called on Russia to offer humanitarian assistance, and on 21 March it launched the same demand to OSCE.
