\"\"Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and Estonian President Arnold Ruutel have voiced hope that the visit to Chisinau by Estonia’s head of state will lead to extend and strengthen the Moldovan-Estonian relations. <\/p>\n

After a meeting with Arnold Ruutel, Vladimir Voronin said that, during the debates between the two heads of state, he informed Ruutel about the internal situation in Moldova, the actions taken by the country on the road towards acceding to the European Union. The Transnistrian conflict represented a separate subject. "I thanked my counterpart for the support given to elaborate the action plan of the Moldova-NATO partnership," the head of state said. <\/p>\n

Voronin said that Estonia’s experience on the European integration way is quite valuable for Moldova, as there are more similitudes between the two states. "Both countries were members of the Soviet Union. Both Moldova and Estonia are small countries with small economic possibilities. Estonia’s experience is particularly important , in order to successfully go the road of European integration, without committing too many mistakes. In this respect, I thank my counterpart for all the support he gives to our country," President Voronin said. <\/p>\n

Arnold Ruutel said that offering assistance to Moldova on the European integration way is a priority of Estonia’s foreign policy. "I think that the European Union (EU) should pay more attention to the problems faced by Moldova in view of their settlement. Estonia is prepared to give the necessary assistance to this end. My country firmly backs the need to unconditionally withdraw the Russian troops from Moldova’s territory, and thinks that, in this situation, it is about Moscow’s credibility towards the commitments assumed within OSCE," Ruutel said. <\/p>\n

Arnold Ruutel also said that his country also faced the Russian army’s presence on its territory. "I refer to the period in which forces representing Moscow’s interests were on the territory of the three Baltic countries, and just like in the case of Moldova, we were threatened with applying force on our country’s territory," Ruutel said. <\/p>\n

"The negotiations with the country’s Russian-speaking population and getting its support had a very important role for Estonia. A roundtable was organised under the presidency with the participation of all the national minorities, and this was a solution to discuss about the accumulated problems. We managed to create a favourable environment to draw to our side the civil society, including the national minorities which did not want the country’s division," Ruutel specified. <\/p>\n

Referring to checking the Moldovan-Ukrainian border on the Transnistrian segment, the Estonian head of state said that it is very important to assure a rigorous control at the frontier, in order to combat the contraband and other negative phenomena. "In its capacity of EU and NATO member, Estonia will support Moldova in the European integration process," Ruutel also said. <\/p>\n
