The PACE co-rapporteurs for Moldova support that the non-recognized authorities in Tiraspol have self-isolated themselves though the fact that they do not allow the Transnistrian entrepreneurs transport they goods through the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. <\/p>\n

The CE representatives belive that the measures put into application starting 3 March by Ukraine and Moldova have to be maintained so that to control the flow of goods at the border. <\/p>\n

One of PACE co-rapporteurs, Josette Durieu, making the summing up of their visit to Moldova, told a 15 March news conference that the introduction of the new customs regime represents a lever of legalising the Transnistrian entrepreneurs’ activity. "The old regime of goods’ transit across the border was convenient to the Tirapsol leaders from the economic point of view, while the situation after 3 March upsets them," Durrieu said. <\/p>\n

Referring to Russia’s role in the Transnistrian conflict, Durrieu said that Russia’s current policy is "sensible and delicate" in the context in which in the near future it has to take over the G-8 chairmanship. <\/p>\n

The second PACE co-rapporteur, Egidijus Vareikis, said that the Russian troops’ withdrawal has an important role, but not definitive, in the Transnistrian conflict settlement. "Russia has to take into account the commitment assumed in Istanbul to this end," Vareikis said. <\/p>\n

Vareikis said that the Transnistrian region will not be recognized by the international bodies even in case of conducting a referendum under the UN’s aegis on the left bank of Dniestre. "The Transnistrian region cannot be offered any status given that the human rights are not observed in the region, and there are not set democratic life norms," Vareikis said. <\/p>\n

Asked about the journalists if the new customs regime is to contribute to the Transnistrian conflict settlement, the PACE co-rapporteurs said that, consequences will unavoidable appear after furher applying the regime. The European officials did not specified which could be these, but stressed that these will could create conditions to undertake new steps on the issue. <\/p>\n

The PACE representatives said that Moldova could enter the EU in a shorter period if the Transnistrian issue is settled faster. The two officials appreciated the current situation in Moldova from the political viewpoint as "sure stability". <\/p>\n
