Chisinau, March 16, 2006 (moldova.org) — On March 16, at a news conference in Kharkov, Julia Tymoshenko revealed that she, while in office as the prime minister of Ukraine, tried to stop the smuggling trough Moldova’s Transnistrian enclave<\/font>. <\/div>\n

"The question of country integrity is one of the most essential to Ukraine," Tymoshenko stressed, providing details that she (as a prime minister) conducted a wide-scale action entitled "Stop contraband!" <\/div>\n

“I can say that the Transnistrian section of our state border is really a vast white spot. Smuggling there–backed, by the way, by high-ranked officials from Ukraine–used to be run at a fantastic scale”, Tymoshenko revealed. “It is my conviction that Ukraine must restore law and order on that border, but only from the Ukrainian side of it, and to ensure movement of all freights with documents drawn up appropriately".<\/div>\n

On March 3, Ukraine introduced a new order of passing cargoes through the Transnistrian section of its border with Moldova. Goods that pass from Transnistria<\/font> to Ukraine and vice-versa have to have \"\"Moldovan customs clearance. The Ukraine-Moldova new customs regime is backed by the European Union, United States, and OSCE – all three are parties of the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks. Only Russia, another party of these negotiations, is backing Transnistria, describing the new customs order as an “economic blockade”. <\/div>\n

Current customs regime that is in line with international norms, including of WTO, has triggered a self-blockade of Tiraspol separatist authorities. The regime in Tiraspol opposes it, being afraid of loosing control over economic activities of the region. <\/div>\n

Moldova has simplified the procedure for Transnistrian firms to register and conduct their foreign economic activities without any restrictions, as the rest of Moldovan firms.
