Any spark between sides may develop into a military confrontation in the region under the present conditions, if Kiev continues to implement the new transit regime for Transnistrian products, Vladimir Kolesnikov, representative of the Russian Security Council, has said in Tiraspol. <\/p>\n

"According to our estimates, we may be witnesses of a humanitarian catastrophe in the region, if the existing situation develops," Kolesnikov warned. <\/p>\n

In turn, the ambassador with special missions of Russia, Valery Kenyaykin, said that the new transit regime was introduced because "somebody wants to seize the economic potential of Transnistria." He noted that Russia holds enough levers of influence, so that "not to leave the people who feel themselves Russians to the will of fate," though it does not have so big global interests like the former USSR. <\/p>\n

Kenyaykin proposed to fine the states which are to blame for the crisis at the Moldovan-Ukrainian border for compromising the contractual commitments of Tiraspol towards foreign partners. In the context, he recalled the alleged violation of the 1997 Memorandum, which allows the Transnistrian region to promote its own foreign economic policy. According to the Russian diplomat, the report of the group of experts will focus on the searching of a solution to this situation. "All political, economic, diplomatic measures will be taken and other levers will be used to settle the crisis. Russia will provide economic assistance to Transnistria, if needed," he underlined. <\/p>\n

He noted that Moscow is ready to do everything in order to persuade the sides to return to the situation before March 3, when the new export regime for the Transnistrian goods was introduced. He called for the organisation of consultations on this problem with the participation of all interested sides. <\/p>\n

The two Russian officials completed their working visit to the eastern breakaway enclave of Moldova on Wednesday, where they have arrived to assess the situation created after Ukraine implemented on March 3 the Joint Declaration of the Moldovan and Ukrainian prime ministers that allows the exportation of Transnistrian goods on basis of the Moldovan customs stamp only. <\/p>\n

At the same time, Chisinau and Kiev have categorically denied the accusations of Tiraspol and Moscow regarding the setup of an economic blockade. Moldovan Reintegration Minister Vasile Sova said that the Tiraspol authorities should allow a free move through the region in order to relieve the situation in the Transnistrian section of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border because all the conditions have been created for a normal functioning of local economic agents. Also, Chisinau denies the accusations that it has violated the 1997 Memorandum, because this document stipulates the right to conduct external economic activities but with the condition to respect the border and single customs system of Moldova. <\/p>\n
