The European Commission (EC) is contented with the achievements registered in the process of implementing the European Union (EU) Action Plan for Moldova during the first year after the document’s signing. At the same time, the EC representative in Moldova said that much remains to be done in the field of assuring the human rights, combatting corruption and reforming the judicial system. <\/p>\n

The head of the European Commission’s Delegation in Moldova, Ambassador Cesare De Montis said at a today’s assessment conference that, among the most relevant achievements registered in this respect, there are the opening of the EC Delegation in Chisinau, the appointment of the EU special representative for Moldova, ambassador Adriaan Jacobovits de Szeged, setting up an EU Border Assistance Mission for Moldova and Ukraine, making progress in the economic reforms’ area etc. <\/p>\n

Asked if EU could increase the financial assistance for Moldova in the process of the plan’s implementation, Cesare De Montis said that it would be possible, but such decisions must be taken by authorities at a high level. In this respect, De Montis welcomed the signing of an agreement between Moldova and the International Monetary Fund (FMI), and said that EU could take advantage of the agreement in order to give assistance to Moldova. <\/p>\n

Moldovan Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Andrei Stratan said that 2006 will be a decisive year in the process of implementing the EU Action Plan for Moldova. He stressed that the most important thing for 2006 will be to strengthen the democracy and the state of law, assuring the economic reforms by creating a favourable climate for foreign investments, initiating a dialogue with EU on facilitating the visa regime etc. <\/p>\n
