The heads of the two structures negotiate possibilities to sign bilateral agreements which would facilitate an operational dialogue between the two states, given that Romania is to join the European Union (EU) in 2007. <\/p>\n

The head of the Romanian diplomacy, Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, on a two-day working visit to Chisinau, today told journalists that Romania is willing to set jointly with Moldova a working calendar over an intergovernmental partnership agreement for Europe, which would point out the Romanian authorities’ interest in Moldova’s European prospect. <\/p>\n

"We are very close to complete negotiations on an agreement on reciprocal travels and visa regime, which is to be signed by 2007. We do not think of visas as a way to censor the Moldovan citizens’ travels to Romania," Ungureanu said. The Romanian minister said he seeks maximum flexibility in this respect, and that the Romanian authorities are even willing to facilitate the mechanism of obtaining the Romanian citizenship. <\/p>\n

Ungureanu said that he submitted to the Moldovan foreign minister the proposal to conclude a juridical agreement on the regime of war graves and cemeteries. "If we succeeded to sign such an agreement with the Russian Federation, I do not see what can impede us to do the same thing with Moldova," Ungureanu said. <\/p>\n

Referring to Moldova’s European bid, Ungureanu said that "Moldova has to be offered the same chance that Brussels has offered to the western Balkans states, and we are willing to help it on this pathway through our readiness to collaborate, and through political decisions". <\/p>\n

Touching upon the Transnistrian problem, the Romanian official Expressed discontent with the outcomes of the "5+2" negotiations. He underlined the need for the EU’s more noticeable involvement in the problem. "As long as the Transnistrian region is at almost 200 km away from the Romanian border, it represents a security problem for Romania, and I can assure you that Bucharest is particularly sensible to the issue," the Romanian minister added. <\/p>\n

Moldovan Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Stratan thanked the Romanian authorities for the positions taken within the international bodies such as the OSCE and the Council of Europe, as regards the Transnistrian conflict settlement, as well as other problems. Stratan said that the two countries’ diplomacies also considered subjects dealing with trade, deepening economic relations and issues of mutual support. <\/p>\n
