Romanian President Traian Basescu shared with his Ukrainian counterpart his desire to see Moldova a EU member as soon as possible. <\/p>\n

The two heads of state met Thursday in Kiev in an atmosphere colder than in April 2005, Romanian press reports say. <\/p>\n

Ukraine’s President Victor Yushchenko reiterated the aspirations of his country to join the European Union. In response, Basescu said Romania is supporting Moldova on its way to accession to the EU, but wants Ukraine to become first a NATO member and then a EU member. <\/p>\n

As regards Transdniestria, the two officials limited themselves to the position that Moldova’s borders must be respected. Basescu pointed out that one of his statements regarding the inviolability of Moldova’s borders had not been correctly interpreted. <\/p>\n
