At the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council from February 2, the US delegation reiterated its position that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova must be respected in the context of Transdniestria conflict settlement. The US diplomats underlined the importance of reaching an agreement as regards the inspection of the military-industrial complex of Transdniestria in the shortest time, the necessity of implementing certain specific elements from the Security and Confidence Building Measures, as well as the importance of the international assessment mission for Transdniestria’s democratization, press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration informs. <\/p>\n

The implementation of the Moldovan-Ukrainian agreement regarding the customs control is very important, US officials said, voicing hope Kiev will reconsider its decision to postpone the implementation of this agreement. <\/p>\n

Another question discussed by the delegation was the non-observance by Russia of the commitments assumed in Istanbul in 1999, although six years have already passed. Russia has to resume the pullout of its military presence from the territory of Moldova, they said. <\/p>\n

EU officials supported the US delegation and confirmed the Union’s willingness to contribute to the lasting settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict by keeping Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and by respecting democracy, the state of law, human rights and national minorities’ rights. <\/p>\n

The European officials voiced regret the third round of negotiations in the enlarged format did not achieve any results. They also regretted the tergiversation by Tiraspol representatives of the inspection of Transdniestria’s military-industrial complex, of the international elections assessment mission and exchange of military information previously agreed upon. <\/p>\n

The EU encouraged Moldova and Ukraine to solve in the shortest time the technical aspects related to the implementation of the Moldovan-Ukrainian customs agreement with the help of EU border assistance mission experts.
