As many as 94,916 Moldovans succeeded in getting Romanian citizenship during 1991-2001, according to the Public Communication Service of the Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs of Romania, quoted by Ziua newspaper. <\/p>\n

Since 2002, the process of granting Romanian citizenship was blocked. The Ministry of Justice undertook this task from the General Passport Division. During 2003 there were approved only 6 applications to receive the citizenship, while 257 Bessarabians became Romanian citizens in 2004. The quoted source says that 1,317 Bessarabians succeeding in regaining their right to citizenship last year. Some 25,345 applications for Romanian citizenship submitted by Moldovan citizens are stocked at the Ministry of Justice at present. <\/p>\n

It was earlier supposed that over half a million people had become Romanian citizens under the law adopted by the Romanian Parliament in 1991. <\/p>\n

According to the Romanian Ministry of Justice, 15,567 applications for Romanian citizenship were submitted to the Embassy of Romania in Chisinau during 2003-2005. <\/p>\n

At the beginning of the current year Romania’s President Traian Basescu mentioned the increased concern about the Romanians living outside the country and simplification of the system for recovering Romanian citizenship by Moldovans and Ukrainians among the priorities of the foreign policy. <\/p>\n

Many Romanian and Bessarabian publications criticized the long process of granting Romanian citizenship, invoking the multiple bureaucratic barriers to this process. <\/p>\n
