The first round of negotiations started today in Tiraspol. Delegations are led by Moldovan Minister for Reintegration, Vasile Sova, Transdniestrian Chief Negotiator Valeri Litskai, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Ambassador William Hill, Russian Ambassador at Large Valeri Nesterushkin, Ukrainian Special Representative Ambassador Dmitry Tkach, EU Special Representative for Moldova, Ambassador Adriaan Jacobovits de Szeged and Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, David Kramer. <\/p>\n

For the first time the US voiced concern in a statement that the Transdniestrian conflict is lasting for a decade and a half hampering the economic development of the region and hindering he population of Moldovan and Transdniestria from living in peace. “Taking account of this, it is imperative that the negotiations end in positive results,” the document reads. <\/p>\n

The talks must be conducted in the spirit of compromise, the US officials say. All the sides must avoid “a provoking rhetoric” and get involved in the activity of the working group on technical issues. “Moldova and Transdniestria must work together to build reciprocal confidence and ensure security in the shortest time,” the declaration reads. At the same time, the document says that Russia must fulfill the commitments it made at international level and withdraw its military forces from Moldova so that the talks could move on. <\/p>\n

In the same connection, the US pledges to continue providing assistance to all the sides participating in the negotiations so as to find a peaceful solution to the Transdniestrian conflict. ”We continue participating in the negotiations and hope we will make headway with them. Those affected by the conflict deserve this,” the statement runs. <\/p>\n
