The economic situation in Moldova is poorer than a year ago, and things progress into a wrong direction, consider most of the respondents to the Public Opinion Barometer November 2007, launched by the Institute for Public Policies.
According to the survey, 36.9% of respondents qualify the economic situation of the country as poorer and much poorer than a year ago, more than a third of Moldovan citizens state the same economic situation, and 28.7% consider the situation improved a little. As many as 52% of respondents are not satisfied with the economic situation.
Generally, the direction things progress in the country seems to be wrong in the opinion of 56.2% of respondents. Other 31.5% consider the direction is good, while about 13% do not know or did not answer this question.
At the same time, 40.8% of interviewees consider current family revenues suffice only for the very necessary things, and 28.5% say the earnings do not cover the strictly necessary. As many as 22.1% of Moldovan citizens believe they have a decent living, and 1.1% state they do not limit themselves in anything.
As many as 32% of Moldovan citizens are concerned about poverty in the first place; 25.3% are afraid of price raise; 13.6% are concerned about their children’s future; 8.7% worry about unemployment; and 6.9%, about corruption.
Asked "What should be done to improve the socio-economic situation of the country?", 28.2% of respondents said the law enforcement mechanism should be improved; 10% believe that leadership must be changed; 8.6% think the role of the government in managing economy should be enhanced; and 8.4% of respondents say social enterprises have to be developed, agricultural sector must be supported and more foreign investments, attracted.
The Public Opinion Barometer was conducted from 29 October to 5 November 2007 on a sample of 1415 people in 86 localities that is representative for the adult population of Moldova (excepting Transnistria). The error margin is of about 2.6%. The survey was conducted by the Survey Institute IMAS-INC Chisinau on the request of the Institute for Public Policies and with the support of Soros Foundation Moldova. // BASA-Press
