Dorin Chirtoacă resigns from the position of Chișinău mayor

16 February 2018- Dorin Chirtoacă resigned from the position of mayor of Moldova’s capital, Chișinău. Chirtoacă believes that the Chișinău local elections should be held in May 2018.

The Liberal declared that his resignation is a sign of protest against the current government. He says that he received the mandate from the citizens, and not “from Plahotniuc, Dodon, Leancă or from this band”.

The interim mayor, Silvia Radu, welcomed Chirtoacă’s resignation, saying that her job is only a temporary one.

“I don’t see any solution other than snap elections in Chișinău. The locals of the capital need to have a representative at the mayor’s office: good, bad, smart or not so much, but theirs, not elected by Plahotniuc or others”, said Chirtoacă.

At the same time, he pledges innocent in his case.

Liberal Dorin Chirtoacă has been the mayor of Chișinău since 2007, now doing his third term in office. Chirtoacă has been under house arrest since May 2017, being investigated for traffic influence over the parking lot payroll. On July 28th, he was suspended from the position of mayor of Moldova’s capital until a final decision of the court. At the beginning of September, after the proposal of the Socialists, the Chisinau Municipal Council approved the organization of a plebiscite for the dismissal of the mayor, which would take place on November 19th. The referendum failed due to low turnout.

President Dodon’s reaction after suspension: Instead of stopping the violations committed by the government, CC gives a green light to their promotion

“I regret that instead of stopping serious violations committed by the government, the Constitutional Court gives the green light to their further promotion. This raises great questions about the professionalism and independence of Court judges.”

“Those in power and the institutions they control simply do not realize the severity of their actions and the consequences that will arise. But, sooner or later, they’ll have to pay for these violations,” declared Dodon on his Facebook page.

President Igor Dodon says that by the decision to suspend him, the Constitutional Court has committed a double illegality and that his attempt to halt a serious violation of the law has been thwarted “by a so-called acting president”.

A group of Democratic Party deputies demanded temporary suspension of President Igor Dodon

President Igor Dodon is on the brink of his fourth temporary suspension after he repeatedly refused to appoint two candidates as ministers.

Today, a group of deputies of the Democratic Party submitted a petition to the Constitutional Court, requesting “a statement of the circumstances justifying the interim president of the Republic of Moldova in order to overcome the constitutional blockade generated by the deliberate refusal to fulfill the constitutional obligation of the appointment of some members of the Government.”

Reminder: Although Prime Minister Pavel Filip declared he will insist on the two candidatures, Igor Dodon refuses to sign the decrees for the appointment of the new ministers proposed by PDM. Dodon said that Silvia Radu, proposed for the position of Minister of Health, would not be a specialist in the given field, and Nicolae Ciubuc, who was promoted to the Minister of Agriculture, would have problems of integrity.
