The documents of candidates for the Chisinau mayor-general post will be accepted starting Monday, May 23. The Chisinau constituency election council will accept the documents in the Chisinau City Hall from 09:00 to 13:00. The council held the first sitting on Thursday.
Ivan Cucu, deputy chairman of the Central Election Commission, had earlier said that the persons willing to take part in the electoral race will have to submit an income declaration, a document confirming that the candidate holds the Moldovan citizenship, and criminal records in case "of any questions". The independent candidates will also submit a list comprising 10,000 signatures of their supporters.
June 10 is the deadline for submission of documents. Candidates will have to start the electoral campaign only after registration.
Also, the council members elected the deputy chairman and secretary of the Chisinau Election Council with ten out of 11 votes. Job seeker Ion Stratulat, holder of bachelor’s degree in law, was elected as chairman, lawyer Nicolae Raileanu became deputy chairman, while Ala Andronache, chief specialist in the National Social Insurance House, was chosen as secretary.
Gheorghe Sima, chairman of the Labour Union, was the only candidate for registration in the electoral race who came to submit his documents before appointment of the Chisinau Election Council administration. He was interested in what order the candidates will be registered on Monday. The council members explained him that the order of registration will be based on a drawing, if several bidders come at the same time.
Another three political parties have posted intention to propose candidates for the Chisinau mayor office until now. The Christian Democratic People’s Party will propose parliamentarian and former deputy Chisinau mayor Gheorghe Susarenco; the Democratic Party appointed Vladimir Guritenco, praetor of the Botanica district of Chisinau; the Liberal Party will propose its deputy chairman Dorin Chirtoaca.
The Central Election Commission has established the date of early local elections for July 10. Early elections will take place in Chisinau and another 12 settlements. The elected mayors will run their offices till the general local elections in 2007.
Serafim Urechean, leader of the parliamentary faction representing Our Moldova Alliance, tendered his resignation from the post of Chisinau mayor on April 20 after holding it for 11 years, in favour of the parliamentarian office.
