100 years ago: Sfatul Țării proclaimed the independence of the Moldovan Democratic Republic

One hundred years ago, on 24 January 1918, Sfatul Țării adopted the declaration of independence of the Moldovan Democratic Republic.

Daniel Ciugureanu was appointed as Prime-Minister of the Republic, while the former head of Sfatul Țării was confirmed as President of the first Moldovan independent republic. The current Romanian national anthem “Deșteaptă-te, române” was chosen as the anthem of the young republic.

Initially declared as an autonomous republic within the post-revolution “Federal Russia” on 2 December 1917, the Moldovan Democratic Republic had Sfatul Țării (Council of the Country- Romanian language) as the only legislative organ- with representatives of most ethnicities and social classes of the Bessarabia region.

The date of independence proclamation coincides with the date of the “Small Union” between the Kingdom of Moldavia and the Kingdom of Wallachia in 1859.

Later, on 27 March 1918, the Republic, again through its Sfatul Țării, decided to unite with the Kingdom of Romania.

President Dodon’s reaction after suspension: Instead of stopping the violations committed by the government, CC gives a green light to their promotion

“I regret that instead of stopping serious violations committed by the government, the Constitutional Court gives the green light to their further promotion. This raises great questions about the professionalism and independence of Court judges.”

“Those in power and the institutions they control simply do not realize the severity of their actions and the consequences that will arise. But, sooner or later, they’ll have to pay for these violations,” declared Dodon on his Facebook page.

President Igor Dodon says that by the decision to suspend him, the Constitutional Court has committed a double illegality and that his attempt to halt a serious violation of the law has been thwarted “by a so-called acting president”.

A group of Democratic Party deputies demanded temporary suspension of President Igor Dodon

President Igor Dodon is on the brink of his fourth temporary suspension after he repeatedly refused to appoint two candidates as ministers.

Today, a group of deputies of the Democratic Party submitted a petition to the Constitutional Court, requesting “a statement of the circumstances justifying the interim president of the Republic of Moldova in order to overcome the constitutional blockade generated by the deliberate refusal to fulfill the constitutional obligation of the appointment of some members of the Government.”

Reminder: Although Prime Minister Pavel Filip declared he will insist on the two candidatures, Igor Dodon refuses to sign the decrees for the appointment of the new ministers proposed by PDM. Dodon said that Silvia Radu, proposed for the position of Minister of Health, would not be a specialist in the given field, and Nicolae Ciubuc, who was promoted to the Minister of Agriculture, would have problems of integrity.
